The legislative power of Niger
The legislative power is carried out by the National Assembly. Its members are elected through the direct universal suffrage for five (5) years based on the proportional representation in the eight (8) ordinary electoral constituencies which correspond to the eight (8) regions of the country and based on the simple majority in the eight (8) special constituencies.
The political configuration of the current legislature (2004-2009) that records one hundred and thirteen (113) Members of Parliament out of which we have fifteen (15) women is composed of the four (4) following parliamentary groups:
- The Social and Democratic Convention political group (CDS-Rahama) with twenty two (22) MPs ;
- The National Movement for the Development of Society (MNSD-Nassara) and its allied the Niger Democrat and Social Party (PSDN Alheri) with forty eight (48) MPs ;
- The Niger Party for Democracy and Socialism political group (PNDS-Tarayya) and its allies the PNA-Al Oumat and the PPN - RDA with twenty five (25) MP ;
- The Democrats Group composed of three (3) political groups which are: The ANDP Zaman-Lahiya, the RSD - Gaskia and the RDP-Jama'a with a total of eighteen (18) MPs.
The parliamentary majority with its eighty eight (88) MPs is composed of three (3) political groups: CDS - Rahama, MNSD - Nassara and allies the PSDN - Alheri and the Democrats Group.
The parliamentary opposition has twenty five (25) MPs is composed of the PNDS -Tarayya and its allied parties.
