Executive Power of Niger

 

Politically level, Niger became a Republic on 18th December 1958. It became independent on 3pd August 1960.

Since then, Niger had five (5) constitutions. The constitution that is currently in force was adopted by referendum and promulgated on 9th August 1999. It establishes  the 5th Republic. It is based on a semi-presidential system including at the executive level the following:

- One President of the Republic elected through the direct universal suffrage ;
- One Prime Minister appointed by the President of the Republic.

The President of the Republic is elected through the direct universal suffrage for five (5) years. He is re-eligible once.

It is the President of the Republic, Head of State, who appoints the Prime Minister from a list of three (3) personalities proposed by the parliamentary majority. On proposal of the Prime Minister, the President of the Republic appoints the other members of the government and terminates theirs functions.
